Mapping and Visual Learning - Think, Map, Design, Interact

Mapping and Visual Learning are closely related to visual literacy, they represent a potent force in human cognition. Visual learning is especially important with new computer technologies, in which we read and interact with screens full of icons, photos, movies, games, avatars, and maps, and of course, text and words.

Combining mapping and visual learning with assessment for learning (formative assessment) and you get the best of both strategies. How do you (or could you) incorporate visual learning, concept maps and graphics organizers in your classroom or in your organizational work?

I have worked with mapping and visual learning as tools for initial creative thinking about a topic, reading comprehension, and combined maps with digital storytelling tools like VoiceThread and Camtasia to communicate ideas, procedures and designs. How do you use mapping and visual learning in your classroom and/or organization?

Digital Storytelling with Students

Student-involved classroom assessment is a contemporary mix developed by Rick Stiggins which strong connections to ideas like Dewey's Experience and Education and Kilpatrick's The Project Method, Vygotsky's social constructivism, and Universal Design for Learning. A core concept for all of these ideas is this, the student who is actively involved in his / her own learning is more likely to plan and work for and sustain success.
